4B Classroom Information

SUPPLIES

Students are supplied with all materials required to work at school. Items that are required for special projects will be requested through agenda messages. Recommended contributions that are not supplied include:

- 1 box of tissues

- pencil case or pencil box

- headphones (non ear bud style)

CLOTHING

Students require two pairs of shoes: one for indoor use and the other for out of doors. We have daily physical education, so students must have appropriate running shoes at school every day. When the weather is appropriate, we may go outside for activities, so students need outdoor shoes that are appropriate for running and playing. In the winter months, it is essential for students to wear a hat, mitts, warm jacket, snow/splash pants and waterproof boots.

NUTRITION

We are a “peanut aware” school; we ask that no known “nut” or “peanut” products come to school.

Children are allowed a water bottle (filled with water only) on their desks. A water bottle with a flip or squirt top is recommended to avoid accidental spills.

ELECTRONICS

All Electronic hand held devices are NOT allowed at school. This includes cell phones and hand held games. Please have your child keep these at home.

HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

We will be using the school agenda to communicate between home and school. It will come home each evening. Please sign the entry daily so that we know that you have read our message for the day as this is are only way of knowing that you have seen the message and received important information. Please feel free to communicate to us through the agenda, by email, phone, or dropping by the classroom after school.

HOME READING

Home reading is already under way for the year! Students will be bringing home an appropriately leveled book and should be reading for 20 minutes a day. Ideally this would be happening 5 times a week. If students/families are busy on a certain night, please try to make up the time later on in the week.

Please record your child’s reading book every day in their agenda. We will be using our home reading for daily Language Arts activities at school, so please make sure the reading is happening!

Students should be reading the same book at home until they are finished. When they have finished their book they are to switch it at school to ensure that they always have a book to read for home reading.

Daily Physical Activity

Our class will be having gym 4 periods per week with 4D, we will go to the climbing climbing wall at least once per week and enjoy other daily physical activities as well.   It is therefore important that students have appropriate indoor running shoes at school every day.  On days when weather permits, the students will go outside for recreation, and should wear appropriate outdoor shoes in which they can comfortably participate in P.E. activities.

Scholastic Book Orders and Magazine subscriptions:

As already outlined, reading is a strong focus at NCE.  To help you provide reading materials for your child at home, monthly Scholastic book orders will be sent home, in addition to special orders (technology, seasonal, etc.).  Please do not feel any pressure to order if you choose not to.  If you do choose to order, rest assured that we use the dividends from the orders to purchase books for the classroom library, home reading and as gifts for the students. We will write the due date for the orders in our agendas.  Please ensure orders and cheques (no cash please) are returned in an envelope or baggie with your child’s name and class on it.  Alternatively, you can pay through the Scholastic website, and our classroom will still receive the bonus credit.

Classroom Volunteers

If you would like to volunteer in class, please send me a note via the agenda.  If you can give me notice, I will be sure to arrange meaningful tasks or activities.  Please note that the office must be provided with a recent Criminal Record Check prior to any volunteer duty, and that you must also sign an annual Confidentiality Form.
