1S Classroom Information
Welcome to Nose Creek Elementary School!
It is with great excitement and anticipation that I welcome you, Grade One students and parents, to Nose Creek Elementary School. My name is Kelly Smit, and I am your child’s Grade One teacher this year. I would like to introduce you to some routines and practices in my classroom.
I invite parents to volunteer in our classroom. Please feel free to let me know if you would like to spend some time working with students or helping out in the classroom.
I hope that each student will be able to donate at least one box of Kleenex for our room. If you could please send a box with your child it would be greatly appreciated, as I know these little noses will need them!
I would like to remind parents that Nose Creek Elementary School has a two-shoe policy; all students will be required to have a pair of “proper indoor running shoes” that do not leave black markings on our school floor.
Nose Creek Elementary’s focus is reading. Along with this focus, comes our Home Reading Program. Every week your child will bring home some books in a bag for you to enjoy over the course of the week together. Listen to your child read, and help them to use appropriate reading strategies. If you feel your child is ready to move up a level, please write a note in the agenda and I will read with them and assess their decoding strategies, sight word knowledge, comprehension, and fluency. If any of the books are lost or seriously damaged you will be responsible for replacing them. This program will begin towards the end of September.
The agenda is an essential communication tool. The Agenda will be the primary source of daily contact between home and school. Students will be writing in their agendas daily. You can look for information and topics of study during our day in our agenda message. Another important feature of our agenda is the pouch at the front. This is where I will be directing students to put important items such as newsletters, schoolwork and additional notes for you. Please feel free to send me information using the pouch or by writing in the agenda. I would appreciate if the parents initial the agenda each day, allowing communication to flow with certainty. With agendas being monitored at home and at school, it will ensure the communication lines remain open during our exciting school year!
Students need to arrive to school with enough time to be prepared to enter the classroom at the bell. Arriving late to school disrupts the morning class routine and the learning of all students. When picking up students please pre-arrange a meeting place where you may be located, this eliminates any anxiety for your child.
Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather every day. The weather is not always enjoyable but it is still valuable for students to have outdoor recess for fresh air and exercise.
Students will require a snack Monday-Friday and a lunch Monday-Friday. Sending a healthy snack and lunch helps to fuel your child’s body and brain. Please ensure that students have the appropriate cutlery needed and note that there is no access to microwaves. Students are encouraged to bring a pop-top water bottle to class to help limit trips to the fountain.
Labeling all items of clothing (coats, shoes, backpacks, lunch bags) will help limit the confusion around lost belongings.
If there are any concerns or questions that arise over the course of the school year please contact me. I look forward to a wonderful Grade One school year together!
